Health Ministry Bans Glutathione Gummies: A Warning to Consumers and Sellers
The Health Ministry has taken a strict stance against the sale and advertising of ASGG Gluta Genc Glow Gummies, which contain glutathione, an unauthorized active ingredient under the Food Regulations 1985. This decision comes after ongoing surveillance by the Food Safety and Quality Programme (PKKM) revealed the product's non-compliance with regulations.
But here's where it gets controversial: Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant with numerous health benefits, and some consumers may be unaware of its presence in these gummies. The ministry's stance raises questions about the balance between food safety and consumer choice.
The ministry emphasizes that glutathione is not listed under Table 12, Schedule Two, Regulation 26 of the Food Regulations 1985, which means it is not allowed in food products. Products containing glutathione must be registered with the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency instead.
As a result, the gummies are now prohibited from being sold or advertised in Malaysia. The ministry has issued a warning to traders and distributors, including online sellers, who still have remaining stock of the product. All sales must be stopped immediately, and sellers are instructed to contact the nearest District Health Office for product seizure.
The ministry also urges consumers currently using the product to stop consumption immediately and seek medical advice or treatment from health professionals. "Consumers are urged to be vigilant when purchasing food products that may contain unauthorised substances," the ministry said.
The public is encouraged to report food safety issues or incidents to the nearest district Health Office or state Health Department. Reports can also be lodged through the Public Complaints Management System (SISPAA) or via the Food Safety and Quality Programme’s official Facebook page.
This action highlights the importance of food safety regulations and the potential risks associated with unauthorized ingredients. It also serves as a reminder for consumers to be cautious when purchasing food products and to report any suspicious activity to the appropriate authorities.
