Louise Duffy’s Fresh Start: Inside Her New RTE Radio 1 Show & Music Curation (2025)

Louise Duffy is ready to shake things up on RTE Radio 1! In a bold move, the presenter is stepping into the shoes of the recently axed Ray D'Arcy, promising a 'fresh start' for the afternoon slot. But is this new beginning what listeners really want? And what does it mean for the future of the station?

Duffy, 41, is gearing up for her debut on the 3 pm show, as RTE prepares to unveil its revamped schedule. She'll be replacing the veteran broadcaster Ray, 61, whose abrupt disappearance from the airwaves last month sparked controversy. Ray's departure, after 11 years at RTE, was attributed to declining listenership, a challenge that Duffy is well aware of.

"It's all about appealing to as many listeners as possible," Duffy reveals. "If that doesn't work, it could be an issue. But I believe I'll have a grace period to settle in." However, she has no plans to acknowledge Ray's previous show, explaining that her hour-long music program will be a departure from Ray's 90-minute magazine format.

The presenter, who previously hosted a show from 12 pm to 1 pm, empathizes with Ray's situation, having experienced a similar fate at Today FM in 2019. "It's tough when you're so intertwined with your show," she reflects. "But I left on good terms and still have friends at Bauer Media."

Despite the challenges, Duffy has proven her ability to take on big shoes, having successfully replaced Ronan Collins in January 2023. However, Ronan's unexpected return to RTE Gold, competing in the same slot, caught everyone off guard. "It was a strange move," Duffy admits, "but this industry is full of surprises."

When it comes to music, Duffy has a unique approach. Unlike commercial stations, she curates her own records, ensuring a diverse and personalized listening experience. "I won't change my playlist for this new slot," she asserts. "Good music is good music, whether it's Diana Ross or Olivia Dean."

As Duffy prepares for her new role, she draws on her 12 years of radio experience, including her time at the Communications Clinic after Today FM. "I've faced challenges, but I always come back to radio because I love it and I'm good at it," she says.

But will Duffy's fresh start be enough to revive RTE Radio 1's listenership? And what does the future hold for the station's lineup? Stay tuned to find out, and don't forget to share your thoughts in the comments below! Is Duffy's approach to music curation a game-changer, or is it a risky move in a competitive industry?
