How To Make A Delicious Iced Mocha At Home

How To Make An Iced Mocha Coffee: Easy & Delicious Recipe (1)

Like I said, making an iced mocha at home is simple.

In a nutshell, it’s an iced coffee with chocolate syrup added to it.

But before we get to our notoriously chocolatey iced mocha recipe, let’s talk a little bit about the ingredients that go into it.

The Ingredients

You’ll need the following things:

  • 4 oz of strong brewed coffee
  • 4 oz of cold milk
  • 1 cup of ice cubes
  • 3 tablespoons of chocolate syrup

The Coffee

Now, when it comes to the coffee, you can pretty much use any kind you like.

If you’re using regular black coffee, it’s a good idea to go for a brewing method that makes a stronger brew.

The moka pot and AeroPress are good examples of brewers that’ll give you an intense cup of coffee.

If you’re using espresso, a double shot will be enough, and you can add a little more milk to make up for the smaller volume of coffee.

If you’re worried you’ll dilute it too much with the extra milk, you can always do a triple espresso shot for an extra strong iced mocha.

And finally, you can use cold brew coffee. If you’re using cold brew concentrate, you should adjust the amount of milk to the amount needed to dilute your concentrate.

For most cold brew concentrates, the dilution ratio is usually around 1:1, but it depends on the ratio used to brew the concentrate itself.

The Chocolate Syrup

As far as the chocolate syrup goes, you’ve got 2 choices:

You can use the store bought stuff, or you can make your own chocolate syrup.

If you’re making your own, you’ll need the following things:

  • ½ a cup of unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • A pinch of salt
  • 4 oz of water
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

To make the syrup, follow these steps:

  1. Mix the cocoa powder and sugar together in a saucepan
  2. Stir in the salt and water
  3. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat
  4. Turn the heat down and simmer for half a minute while stirring
  5. Take it off the heat and let it cool
  6. Stir in the vanilla

Don’t worry if it isn’t thick when you take it off the heat – it’ll thicken as it cools down.

You can store your chocolate syrup in a jar or bottle in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

The Milk

You can really use whatever kind of milk you like when you’re making this drink.

Full fat, skim milk, half n half, oat milk, soy milk, almond milk – whatever kind of milk floats your boat.

Go nuts.

The Ice

It’s worth mentioning that you should always use filtered water to make your ice.

Unless you’re lucky enough to live somewhere where you know the tap water is exceptionally clean, filtered is usually a safer bet.

The water you use to make your ice can definitely affect the taste of your coffee, so it’s a detail you shouldn’t overlook.

The Method

Once you’ve got everything you need, you can start making your drink.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Drizzle 1 tablespoon of chocolate syrup around the sides of a glass
  2. Add the ice cubes to the glass
  3. Once your coffee has cooled down, pour it into a co*cktail shaker
  4. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of chocolate syrup to the co*cktail shaker
  5. Shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds to combine
  6. Pour the mixture from the co*cktail shaker into the glass
  7. To finish it off, pour the milk into the glass over the coffee

CAUTION: Make sure your coffee has cooled down before you put it in the co*cktail shaker.

I can’t stress this enough – it’s super important. If you pour it in while it’s still piping hot, it’ll burst out of the shaker while you’re shaking it and end up all over your kitchen.

Don’t own a co*cktail shaker?

No worries.

A mason jar will work just as well – just make sure you seal the lid tightly.

If you like, you can also top your iced mocha with whipped cream, milk or dark chocolate shavings and a chocolate drizzle.

And if you’re feeling really decadent, a scoop of chocolate ice cream can really take things up a level.

But I find that in this case less is more, and I prefer to keep it simple.

FAQ

Now, there are tons of different ways you can make this drink.

This is just one of a million different methods out there.

So, you might have some questions about possible variations and tweaks.

Here are the answers to some of the most common questions that popped up.

How do you make a mocha Frappuccino?

Turning this iced mocha into a mocha Frappuccino is easy peasy.

All you need is a blender and one extra ingredient.

Which ingredient is that, you’re probably wondering?

A Frappuccino base syrup.

Making one is easy.

All you need to do is make a simple syrup by simmering ¾ of a cup of sugar and ½ a cup of water over low heat. Then, you pour it into a blender and blend it with a teaspoon of xanthan gum powder.

Once you’ve made the base syrup, put 3 tablespoons in a blender together with all the other iced mocha ingredients – ice included.

Blend until smooth, and pour into a glass to serve.

Easy!

How do you make an iced white chocolate mocha?

How To Make An Iced Mocha Coffee: Easy & Delicious Recipe (5)

To make a white chocolate mocha, all you have to do is sub the chocolate syrup for white chocolate sauce.

Just like with chocolate syrup, you can buy it ready to go, or make it yourself from scratch.

To make enough white chocolate sauce for just 1 iced white chocolate mocha, all you need is 2 ingredients:

  • 7 oz of white chocolate
  • ⅓ of a cup of heavy cream

Put both ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat until the white chocolate has melted completely. Take it off the heat and let it cool, then transfer it to a mason jar to store.

Like regular chocolate syrup, it stays good in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

What’s the difference between an iced mocha and an iced mocha latte?

There is no difference.

It’s the same drink – it’s just that sometimes it’s called an iced mocha latte, and other times just an iced mocha, for short.

See, here’s the thing:

An iced mocha is actually really just an iced latte with chocolate added to it.

So, that’s why it’s often referred to as an iced mocha latte.

What’s Next?

That’s everything you need to know about making an iced mocha.

This is one of my favorite iced coffee recipes – especially when you use homemade chocolate syrup. (Definitely worth the extra 15 minutes of prep!)

I really hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

And I’m sure you will.

I mean, let’s face it – it’s iced coffee and chocolate.

What’s not to love about that?
