Stewart and Durant first met when they were paired together on Season 31 of ABC’s popular dance competition. Best known for his role in CODA, the deaf actor taught Stewart sign language onDWTS. The pair learned to communicate without an ASL translator and placed fifth overall. Although the partners grew close during the show, they did not become an item until after their elimination.
The couple announced that they were dating on Valentine’s Day 2023. “My Valentine. ♥️,” Durant captioned a selfie of him and Stewart on a pier. In an interview with Us Weekly, Durant spoke more about the couple’s relationship. “Honestly, just life with Daniel is the most enjoyable thing. I know that he would say the same thing. We talk about it all the time,” she said. “Life together, growing together, learning about each other and the life that we wanna create is the most important and special thing for us. And then all the travel and all the different things that we get to do together, they’re just all bonuses.”
Nearly one year after announcing their relationship, Durant got down on one knee and asked Stewart to marry him. The actor told People that he popped the question on top of the mountain on their Christmas hike. Then, he had each family member share what they were looking forward to in 2024.
“I was the last one — and I started talking about the year, about us meeting and everything that happens in life. I just feel like there’s balance. She sees me. She knows my culture, my language, and understands everything about me,” Durant explained about the sentimental moment. Thankfully, Stewart answered yes!
“We were both emotional, overwhelmed with joy and at peace knowing that this would eventually be part of our story,” she added. “It felt like magic, but at the same time, it felt right and normal.” The dancer shared the exciting news on Instagram on Dec. 29 with a photo of herself showing off her ring. “Forever!!” she captioned the post.
Now that the pair are thinking about their wedding, Stewart told The Messengerthat she only has “a few things in mind” for her special day, including one non-negotiable.
“A non-negotiable for me is that an interpreter does not interpret Daniel’s vows,” Stewart told the site in January 2024. “It’s really important for me to not hear another voice in my aura. I just really want that to just come directly through me. Now how we will make that accessible for all of our hearing guests, we’re still trying to figure out.”
Stewart confirmed there will be interpreters at her wedding for the rest of the ceremony, as most of the couple’s guests will be from the deaf community.
“We’re so excited because we’re so interested in how this event will be,” she added. “Half of the people will be hearing and then the other [half] will be deaf, so it’s going to be this merge of different cultures and different perspectives.”
She continued, “We will have interpreters available at our wedding as well because a lot of the people in my life don’t have anyone that’s deaf in my family. So ASL is going to be completely new to my family.”
