Basic Granola Recipe (1)

There’s nothing fancy about this recipe. It’s about as basic as it gets.

I love brunch food and I’ve got plenty of fun and unique breakfast ideas on this site to prove it. But sometimes you just wan to keep it simple.

Basic Granola Recipe (2)

I love this granola because it’s so versatile. It tastes good paired with all kinds of fruit. It works just as well with tropical pineapple or mango as it does with apples, cherries, or lemon. Tops for yogurt parfaits, plus it’s great cold or warm. Lately I’ve been addinga little milk and heatingit slightly in the microwave- so comforting! It softens up a little bit but still has a great hearty texture.

Basic Granola Recipe (3)

If you’ve never made homemade granola, I urge you to try this recipe! It’s so quick and easy (we’re talking 10 minutes of active time), and nothing store bought could ever beat the taste or crunch. Plus you can totally put your own spin on it. Add dried fruit, seeds, coconut, nut butters, even chocolate- the options are limitless!

This tastes great! Is it supposed to clump up in clusters? Mine just stayed very loose. I was hoping it would cluster up.

Yes, it should clump up. I’m sorry to hear yours didn’t. I think an additional egg white would fix that. I’ll update the recipe- thank you for the heads up!

I can definitely try that. Thanks. Again, it tastes great and overall is crispy. Just wasn’t clumpy…not a big deal. Thanks for the reply 🙂

Thought I had left a rating on this before, but just to be sure…..Best granola recipe I have ever tried! Seriously…..and I have tried some others, but this one…..it’s the keeper. I make it just as the recipe is written, and after it’s baked, I like to add dried chopped dates, sometimes coconut, craisins, all kinds of dried fruit. I bagged this granola and gave to so many as Christmas gifts…..and many wanted the recipe. If you are looking for a yummy granola that will “cluster” after baking…..this is your recipe. Thank you for this amazing recipe!

I started making my own Greek yogurt and this topping is perfect. I am currently making my second batch in two weeks. Thanks for posting this.

That sounds fantastic! I have never made Greek yogurt but it sounds like a really fun project. So glad you’re enjoying this granola! Thanks for the 5-star review!

FAQs

What is plain granola made of? ›

Basic (but very good) granola requires just a handful of ingredients: rolled oats, a sweetener, some cooking oil, and maybe nuts or dried fruit. Once you master that basic formula, it's easy to customize a mix for your own preferences.

What ingredient makes granola clump together? ›

Clumpy Granola Method: Add Egg White

About this method: According to Deb Perelman of Smitten Kitchen, “Nothing glues like protein.” While there are many granola recipes that include an egg white, I got this tip from the Big Cluster Maple Granola recipe in The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook.

Why is my homemade granola not crunchy? ›

I aim to let it hit room temperature, whatever that may be; the real point is to give it ample time to shed excess heat and steam. This should take about 45 minutes; if left out indefinitely, the granola can turn sticky or soft, so do try to put it away as soon after cooling as you can.

Is it worth making your own granola? ›

Advantage homemade. Both granolas have whole oats as their main ingredient, but the Kellogg's is high in refined sugar and contains palm oil. The homemade version contains protein-rich pecans and uses only a small amount of honey, brown sugar, and vegetable oil. It took me an hour to make granola from scratch.

Is eating homemade granola healthy? ›

Often touted as health food, many packaged granolas contain so much fat, sugar, and calories that you might as well eat a candy bar. On the other hand, when enjoyed in moderation, healthy homemade granola is an excellent source of fiber, iron, healthy fat, and protein.

Is granola basically oatmeal? ›

Oatmeal vs. Granola. The primary difference between oatmeal and granola is that oatmeal is made from whole oat grains that have been cooked at a higher temperature than usual to gelatinize the starch. Granola contains rolled oats, fruits, honey, raisins, almonds, and other components.

What is the binding agent for homemade granola? ›

Nut butter is a super flavorful fat that serves multiple purposes in granola. It acts as a binding agent—along with additional coconut oil and whatever natural sweetener I've chosen—helping to pull the dry ingredients together into a wet, sticky mass for baking.

What is the binder in granola? ›

The binder is what helps the base ingredients clump together into clusters. Traditionally this is usually a sugar syrup, but it's possible to use any ingredient that has the power to bind. Egg - Egg whites are a great binder for granola if you are trying to avoid sugar.

Why is my homemade granola soft? ›

1. Baking time: Increase the baking time for your granola. The longer you bake it, the drier and crunchier it will become. Keep a close eye on it to avoid burning, and stir it occasionally during baking to ensure even toasting.

What was the downside to granola as a food? ›

Granola may prompt weight gain if eaten in excess, as it can be high in calories from added fats and sugars. What's more, sugar is linked to chronic conditions like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and obesity.

Why does my homemade granola taste bitter? ›

Spoiled granola is usually recognizable by a change in smell and taste. If you notice an off smell - something musty, sour, or just not quite right, it's best to toss it. The taste will also be noticeably different, often becoming bitter.

Why does my granola taste fishy? ›

The oxidation products have strong rancid off-flavors including the typical “fishy note”, and the oxidized oil has a reduced nutritional value.

Why is granola so expensive in USA? ›

Jamie Lee McIntyre MS RDN, dietitian and nutrition consultant says the price of high-quality granola makes sense, as many brands spend money on organic ingredients. Plus, many higher-end granola brands make small batches to maintain freshness, which can increase manufacturing costs per unit.

How many days does homemade granola last? ›

When stored properly at room temperature, fresh homemade granola can last for up to four weeks. Preserve its quality by letting it cool completely before storing. Packing it while it's warm leads to condensation and, consequently, unnecessary moisture.

Is granola just as healthy as oatmeal? ›

Both oatmeal and granola make for a healthy, nutritious breakfast, but the winner for us is granola—the added nuts, seeds, and dried fruits give you a source of fiber and healthy fats that oatmeal can't quite compete with.

Is plain granola good for you? ›

Healthy granola contains whole grains such as oats and barley, nuts, and very little added sugar and fat. Eaten in moderation, this calorie-dense food can help fill you up, provide energy, and have a positive impact on several important metabolic health indicators (blood glucose, blood pressure, cholesterol, weight).

Can I eat plain granola? ›

This granola can be eaten straight from the bag or served as a breakfast cereal. But we especially love it when its layered and made into a parfait. Use yogurt and cream cheese as your base, then add fruit like kiwi, banana, orange and frozen berries.

What is the difference between granola and oats? ›

Although similar, oats and granola are very different. Oats are a healthful cereal grain, often added to granola. Granola is far more versatile and consists of oats and other food items (such as dried fruits and nuts). Both are typically toasted and often enjoyed for breakfast.

Is granola a wheat or oats? ›

Granola is a food consisting of rolled oats, nuts, seeds, honey or other sweeteners such as brown sugar, and sometimes puffed rice, that is usually baked until crisp, toasted and golden brown.
